Murcia, a region of enchantment

Known in agricultural circles as the european vegetal garden, Murcia offers endless possibilities to enjoy this Easter.  For many, this region is a great unknown, but that is about to end, as at EDYPRO we have decided to give you some tips in case you still do not have a destination for your holidays.

Situated between the lands of Valencia, southern Andalusia and the plains of La Mancha, Murcia is a small region full of secrets and monumental cities such as Cartagena and Caravaca. Known for its famous market garden, this land is a paradise for the production of fruit and vegetables, thanks to the semi-arid Mediterranean climate and its environmentally friendly production. The crops of lemons, grapefruit, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, grapes, watermelons, the PDO Jumilla pear and the Torre Pacheco melon are some of the most important. As for its vegetables, lettuce, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, courgettes, cabbages, artichokes… are some of the products that have been exported for decades.

In addition to its great gastronomy where going out for tapas is a classic that you can’t miss on your trip, make a note of these places to visit on your getaway.

WHAT TO VISIT

If you are one of those people who prefer agrotourism, you cannot miss places like

  • El Usero. Located in Bullas, the Salto del Usero is an ideal bathing area with a two and a half metre high cliff at the high headwaters of the river Mula.
  • The Almadenes canyon. A beautiful place between the rice fields of Calasparra and the Mulata dam where you can enjoy sailing on an inflatable raft or on foot if you prefer. This canyon also conserves the last autochthonous riverside forests and is located between Cieza and Calasparra.
  • Mount Arabí. Of great geological and archaeological interest. This small mountain offers caves such as La Horadada as well as numerous petroglyphs and cave paintings that you can visit on a signposted route.
  • Sierra Minera de la Unión. The Romans had 40,000 slaves in this mountain range and nowadays it has become an essential arid landscape on your route. It will undoubtedly be one of the most peculiar places you can visit.
  • Deserts of Abanilla. A real delight for the eyes. This unusual place will provide you with some surreal photographs. This desert is nothing more than the reliefs and coral reefs at the bottom of an ancient sea that existed 10 million years ago.

If you want surreal and beautiful landscapes, you can’t miss places like the Calas de Bolnuevo and Calnegre coves, the Calblanque Natural Park, the Ricote valley or the peach blossom in Cieza.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to stroll through historic streets, these are your basic points of interest:

  • The old quarter of Murcia. Its narrow streets, its brand new Cathedral, the Jeronimos Monastery, its Casino, the Romea Theatre, the Santa Clara la Real Convent, the Plaza de las Flores, the Veronicas market or crossing the Segura River over the old and new bridges.
  • Cartagena. The Zapata house and its modernist architecture are a must. As well as the Pedreño palace, the Casino or its spectacular Town Hall and the Roman theatre.
  • Cehegín. It stands out for the compactness of its urban layout. An ideal place to lose yourself walking through its streets.
  • Caravaca. Levantine Baroque everywhere. Don’t miss the Church of El Salvador.
  • Aledo. On a rocky outcrop, it is one of the most charming villages. The castle of La Calahorra is in excellent condition.

WHICH ACTIVITIES

  • Go for tapas. A must. With its garden produce, fish and seafood from Cartagena and Mazarrón, its wines from Jumilla, Yecla or Bullas or the salted fish from the Mar Menor… it is impossible not to enjoy its gastronomic delights.
  • Bicycle routes.  To get lost while you do sport with incredible views of the Sierras de Moratalla or Espuña.
  • Diving in Cabo de Palos. Ideal for water lovers.
  • Enjoy its traditional festivals such as the Easter Week celebrations, full of events for the whole family.

In just 11,000 kilometres, the Region of Murcia offers an endless variety of landscapes where you can enjoy these days off. Whether inland, along the coast, in the huerta, or on the high plateau, Murcia will surprise you.
