Solution to high salinity of soils
PROBLEM
Increasingly, we are finding it difficult to grow crops because of the salinity of either the soil or the water. Salts inhibit the development of the root system and end up burning the absorbing hairs and secondary roots, and all this impairs the plants’ ability to develop.
Two types of salts accumulate in agricultural soils:
- Mineral salts from fertilisers which, due to the lack of cation exchange in the soil, are converted into primary forms and, as they are not assimilated
by plants, accumulate in the soil in the form of toxic salts. - Toxic salts (sodium and chlorine ions) are ty
pical for land that was previously seawater or irrigation water.
The droughts we have in the Mediterranean arc cause water degradation and increase soil salinity. This causes critical situations such as the one shown in the images taken on 15 April in the southern part of the Region of Murcia.
Not only can you see the salt layer accumulating on the margins of the drip bulbs, but also symptoms of plant weakness:
- Very thin trunk implying low raw sap transit potential.
- Very whitish, thickening fruit, showing calcium deficiency and difficulties in fattening and producing tissue of good consistency and quality.
- Small leaves with reduced daily photosynthesis capacity.
SOLUTION
Our technical assistan recommended these applications of COUPÉ REGENERACIÓN Plus:
- 1ª application 16 of April COUPÉ REGENERACIÓN Plus 60 L./ha.
- 2ª application 3 of May COUPÉ REGENERACIÓN Plus 40 L./ha.
With these applications we manage to regenerate the soil’s own microbial flora and increase cation exchange to contribute to the transformation of mineral salts into an assimilable form. At the same time, it manages to free the clay-humic complex of toxic salts, displacing the sodium ion and the toxic salts from the upper soil horizon of the crop.
RESULTS
On 10 May, after only 25 days, this crop has already shown a radical change:
- The salt crust has been removed from the soil,
- The trunk of the plants has fattened,
- The fruits have taken on an intense green colour, which is a symptom of a correct thickening process.
