Within our biotechnological solutions action plan, we also consider the correct management of the crop to achieve spectacular results. Pruning is a fundamental aspect as it influences the productivity of the tree and, therefore, the success of the crop.
That is why EDYPRO wanted to offer practical workshops on pruning carob trees. This training was divided into two parts: training pruning and adult carob pruning.
During the first part of this practical class, our CEO and technical director, Vicente Puchol, explained the ideal structure of the carob tree, oriented towards a new model of agriculture. The correct configuration of the tree will result in a significant increase in production, a significant reduction in annual pruning costs and will prevent the tree’s alternate growth.
The participants were able to learn and analyse in the field how to interpret and carry out the correct formation of the tree through practice on different specimens that were treated.
As for pruning adult carob trees that have not been pruned for years, Puchol pointed out that this is a different technique to the one used in training. “What is there is what is there, we have to interpret the tree to identify what we should leave and what we should eliminate to get to where we want to take it”, he explained.
Our technical director warned that in this type of tree we have to be cautious, given the size of the branches. It is preferable to segment from top to bottom to avoid danger. Also avoid pruning on windy days.
To illustrate this technique, the participants witnessed the pruning of a large monumental carob tree. After the intervention, the tree was well defined and, after the summer, it will have a strong sprouting.
