Debunking the myths of agriculture

There are several myths around agriculture that are sometimes, not true. So today, from EDYPRO, we give you technical arguments to dismantle them. Let’s start.

1.- “The more flowers there is in a crop, the better the production is”. Incorrect.  In arboricurtura this is a false belief because the ability to produce fruits of good size, with tight, dense flesh and a high juice content depends on the ability of the tree to accumulate metabolites that are produced in daily photosynthesis. And for this it is necessary to have an adequate number of leaves.

To dismantle this myth, it is also necessary to point out that excess fruit increases competition between organs and reduces the chances of achieving a good size. And finally, the trees with a lot of fruit are more conducive to have ups and downs in each year production.

2.- “You have to treat the disease when you see it.” Incorrect. Both in agronomy and medicine, the best result for a healthy crop is the prevention of diseases and their proper management. In this sense, the hydric and nutritional endowments or the optimal pruning allow to maintain the self-defense of the crop at a good level and make it more resistant.

Even so, when the optimal environmental conditions are given, it is likely that the crop will become infected and the level of it depends on the farmer.

If we do the phytosanitary treatment when the damage is already visible, we lose in two ways:

  • On the one hand, the crop damage is already done and in this way the productive potential is reduced.
  • On the other, the active materials also affects to the plant, weakening and reducing even more its capacity to produce.

In this sense, biotechnology allows activating self-defense forces so the plant is less receptive to diseases and pests. This is the case of CENICIENTA, a biotechnological solution that inhibits the fruiting of powdery mildew spores on the plant epidermis while nourishes the plant with microelements necessary for a correct development of its physiological functions.

In any case, the best harvests are always achieved by those technicians and farmers who carry out preventive actions. At EDYPRO we always make a comparison of prevention with car insurance, it is mandatory to have them but hopefully you never have to resort to it.

3.- “The more fertilizer for the crops, the better.” Incorrect. Only listening the plant needs, we will know its level of demand in terms of nutrition. In this sense we have to avoid two situation:

  • Soil blocking by the passage of macroelements in primary chemical form or blocking of some elements by excess of others.
  • Excess vigor that reduces crop productivity. In these cases, the plants that have an excessive vegetative development tend to reduce the number of fruits formed, abort the fruits already fertilized or lack the fruits that are getting fat, in favor of the new vegetative mass.

Therefore, if the crop is a productive plant, and not an ornamental one, we have to find the balance and it is preferable to stay short of fertilizer since it can always be added easier than removing the one that was left over.
