Update of 2015 campaign fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata)

The Department of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development is monitoring the population of fruit flies in citrus areas of Valencia, in the framework of the strategy against the Ceratitis capitata, better known as the fruit fly.

It is a widespread species in the Mediterranean area and southern Spain, affecting citrus, stone fruit and pome lesser extent, persimmon, fig and vine.

The only productions that are not affected are those obtained from late autumn to early spring due to the effect that makes the cold of that time in the insect, with no activity.

The larva of this fly feeds on the pulp of the fruit and deposits extrementos them, also causing the proliferation of fungi that produce putrefaction, which makes the fruits fall to the ground prematurely or are not marketable.
